Five Days of Light

Diwali is not a single day — it's a five-day festival, each with its own story, rituals, and joy.

Day 1
🪔
Dhanteras
The festival opens with Dhanteras — a day to honour wealth and prosperity. Families clean their homes and buy gold, silver or new utensils as a blessing for abundance.
Day 2
🌙
Naraka Chaturdashi
Also called Chhoti Diwali. Families wake before sunrise for oil baths to purify body and soul, lighting small lamps and celebrating the triumph of good over evil.
Day 3
Diwali (Main Day)
The night of Lakshmi Puja. Homes blaze with diyas, fireworks light the sky, families share sweets, and the goddess of prosperity is welcomed through every illuminated door.
Day 4
🎁
Govardhan Puja
Celebrates Lord Krishna's lifting of Govardhan Hill. Offerings of food are made, and in some regions it marks the new year — a time for fresh intentions and gratitude.
Day 5
🤝
Bhai Dooj
The festival closes with a beautiful celebration of sibling bonds. Sisters offer prayers and tilak for their brothers, and brothers give gifts — love exchanged in both directions.

How Diwali is Celebrated

From the first diya lit at dusk to the last sweet shared with neighbours —
these traditions make Diwali timeless.

🕯️

Lighting the Diyas

Rows of clay oil lamps are placed at doorways, windows, and pathways. The light is said to guide Goddess Lakshmi and ward off darkness and negativity.

🎨

Rangoli Art

Intricate patterns made with coloured powders, flower petals, or rice flour are drawn at entrances to welcome guests and divine blessings into the home.

🍮

Sweets & Mithai

Boxes of handmade sweets — laddoo, barfi, kaju katli, gulab jamun — are prepared at home and gifted to family, friends and neighbours as tokens of love.

🙏

Lakshmi Puja

On the main day, families gather to offer prayers to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. Homes are swept clean to welcome her divine presence and blessings.

🎆

Fireworks

The night sky explodes with colour and light. While eco-friendly celebrations are growing, the spectacle of fireworks remains a beloved part of the Diwali experience.

👗

New Clothes

Wearing new clothes on Diwali is a cherished custom symbolising fresh beginnings. Vibrant silks, embroidered kurtas, and lehengas fill the season with colour.
